Fundación Valenciaport Installed Walkable Solar Panels in the Port of Valencia

20/11/2025

Fundacion Valenciaport has successfully installed an innovative system of walkable photovoltaic panels in the Port of Valencia, marking a significant milestone within the pilot activities carried out under RENEWPORT. The initiative aims to demonstrate how solar energy can be generated directly in pedestrian areas without occupying additional space—an approach with strong potential for replication in other port environments.

The pilot consists of 26 walkable solar panels, covering nearly 30 m² and delivering a total installed capacity of 5.2 kWp. Integrated into the sidewalk leading to the main parking area of the Port Authority of Valencia, the panels are specifically designed to withstand continuous pedestrian traffic. They fully comply with UNE anti-slip standards, ensuring safe daily use.

Each panel provides 200 Wp, operating at 47 V and 5.8 A. The energy produced is routed through a 10 kW Huawei inverter, supplying renewable electricity to nearby APV buildings, primarily for lighting and climate control.

The new pilot represents a substantial technological evolution, enabling more robust testing of performance, durability, and integration into busy port areas.

In the coming months, Fundación Valenciaport will monitor the system’s energy output and assess maintenance needs. The team will also conduct a detailed study on the scalability of this technology within the Port of Valencia, examining integration possibilities with the existing grid and evaluating economic and environmental impacts.

By validating the performance of walkable solar technologies in real operating conditions, this pilot action contributes valuable insights into innovative solutions for clean energy generation within port spaces.
