The RENEWPORT project is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Port of Rijeka Authority’s pilot investment: a new photovoltaic power plant installed on the roof of the port’s main administrative building. This achievement represents a significant milestone in the project’s mission to support Mediterranean ports in their transition toward renewable energy and cleaner operations.
The newly installed solar system will enable the Port of Rijeka to cover a substantial portion of its electricity needs through locally produced renewable energy. By reducing its dependence on fossil fuels, the port will not only lower operational emissions but will also contribute to improved air quality for citizens in the surrounding urban area. This shift is fully aligned with RENEWPORT’s objectives to mitigate climate change and enhance environmental performance in port–city interfaces.
Given the port’s high energy demand, this investment demonstrates how ports can play a meaningful — though not exclusive — role in supporting clean energy supply for cities. The Rijeka pilot continues its long-term commitment to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, showing the direction in which modern ports must evolve.
