Port of Koper Completes Solar Energy Pilot

08/06/2026

The Port of Koper has successfully completed a solar energy pilot under the RENEWPORT project, taking another important step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.

The pilot involved the installation of a photovoltaic (PV) system on the rooftop of the Container Terminal administrative building, enabling the port to generate renewable electricity on site while reducing its dependence on external energy sources.

Thanks to its coastal location and extensive rooftop space, solar energy was identified as the most suitable renewable solution for the port. The project included the reinforcement of the building’s roof and the installation of 321 photovoltaic modules, two inverters and 163 optimizers connected to the port’s internal power network.

The new system produces more than 150 MWh of clean electricity every year, cutting CO₂ emissions by over 43 tonnes annually and helping to reduce energy costs. At the same time, the pilot has strengthened the port’s expertise in renewable energy technologies and demonstrated the potential of ports to become clean energy hubs.

The knowledge and experience gained through the initiative will support the development of practical tools within the RENEWPORT project, helping other ports and coastal regions accelerate their transition to sustainable energy solutions.
